Stir together strawberries and sugar. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, whip cream until stiff peaks form.
Set aside 1/4 cup (60 mL) of the strawberries and 1 tsp (5 mL) of the basil for garnish. Fold meringue pieces, remaining strawberries (and any juices) and remaining basil into the whipped cream. Divide mixture among 6 bowls and top with reserved strawberries and basil.
